Confirmation of Payee and Verification of Payee providers
Confirmation of Payee asks the payee's bank whether the name your user typed matches the UK sort code and account number before money moves. Verification of Payee does the same for euro payments to an IBAN. Unirail's catalogue lists 6 CoP providers for the UK and 9 VoP providers across 21 countries, all listed from their own documentation.

Name check questions
What is Confirmation of Payee?
Confirmation of Payee (CoP) is a UK name check. Before a payment goes, the payer's side asks the payee's bank whether the name typed matches the sort code and account number. The answer is a match, a close match that comes back with the name on the account, or no match.
What is Verification of Payee?
Verification of Payee (VoP) is the EU's name check for euro credit transfers to an IBAN, required by the Instant Payments Regulation. The payer's PSP asks the payee's PSP whether the name matches the IBAN before the payment is sent.
When does Verification of Payee reach non-euro EU countries?
VoP will reach non-euro EU countries from 9 July 2027 (Regulation (EU) 2024/886).
Can Unirail run Confirmation of Payee checks today?
Unirail doesn't route CoP or VoP checks yet. The CoP and VoP providers in the catalogue are listed from their own documentation. Unirail does route account ownership checks today. When your user links their own account through Plaid, Yapily or Enable Banking, the bank confirms they hold it and Unirail records the account as verified.
Do I need a name check if the user linked their own account?
A bank link proves the user holds that account. That covers the same risk for payments to their own account. A name check matters when your user pays someone else's account from details they typed, because that's where a wrong or fraudulent name can slip through.
What should my app do on a close match?
Show your user the name the bank returned and let them either correct the details or go ahead knowing the name differs. On no match, ask them to check the details with the person they're paying before any money moves.
Check the payee before money moves
Once you have an account, you can start with account ownership checks by bank link in test mode. Talk to us about the CoP or VoP provider you contract with.
